The reddish-purple yangmei has been cultivated in China for many thousands of years and is now marketed worldwide under a variety of names and labels. The fruit is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Its bittersweet flesh is lighter than the dark-red peel would lead you to believe. Yangmei is mainly used as an ingredient in multifruit recipes.
