Cashew Apple
Elephant louse from Brazil?
That’s what the fruit is called in Brazil. Even though we're not familiar with it here, we’re all familiar with its seeds: cashews. Hang on a minute – that's a nut!
Okay, that's right, but the cashew nut grows on a fleshy, thickened fruit steam, known as the cashew apple – the cashew fruit, our great insiders' tip. However, because the pear-shaped cashew fruit is not actually the fruit, but only the fruit stem, we call it a pseudo-fruit. All well and good – but what does it taste like? Surprisingly tart and sweet, a little bit sour, and very juicy.
The flesh of the cashew fruit also has thirst-quenching qualities and adds a touch of astringency to drinks made with fruit flesh of this type. In addition, the vitamin C content of the cashew is around five times that of an orange.
