Physalis
Wait till she drops her husk!
Physalis has had an impressive career. Just 15 years ago, this extremely beautiful fruit was still unpopular in our latitude.
Today physalis is highly sought-after and garnishes desserts, cocktails, and more. Mainly, however, physalis is becoming more and more common in fruit juices, jams, and teas.
The Cape gooseberry or physalis is a member of the nightshade family and therefore related to tomatoes. It originated in South America but is now also widely cultivated in South Africa. This exotic fruit is loaded with vitamins C and B as well as provitamin A and also has a high iron content.
The purée is light orange and its classic sweet and tangy flavor is a treat for the taste buds.
